‘No Place Like Bris’ (2025) explores the Bristol millennial male experience. Brandt’s new performance explores the ‘Cypher’; a circular space of gathering used in Hip-Hop culture as a place of skill exchange, battles and a place to build your reputation. This performance flips the idea of the Cypher from ego driven, into a space of vulnerability and sharing. The work creates a Cypher for men to discuss difficult moments of adolescence through the mediums of Breaking and Rapping; two of the pillars of Hip-Hop. Featuring 6 dancers and 6 rappers, all from Bristol, Brandt and his peers share through both Dance and Voice in an intimate performance. Cardboard ‘Freeze’ sculptures sit within the space, exploring the duality of exterior ‘hardness’ and interior vulnerability, exemplified by the tension between ‘cool-looking’ freezes and the fragility of the material of cardboard. These works will sit on plinths sourced by ‘Lowlands Bristol’, one of Bristols finest vintage furniture businesses. The floor will be covered in cardboard, referring to the buskers flooring of Brandt’s childhood – doing street performances. Two short performance films, extending the ideas of the live performance will be shown on screens. Vinyl record on a working turntable with headphones will allow for the audience to have an intimate listen to the soundtrack of this show. Food on the opening night will be supplied by local Bristol business ‘OG’s Pot’.
